On a beautiful Friday in July, over 1,000 children served by Catholic Social Services converged on Neshaminy Shore Picnic Park for a day of fun and games. The children, who attend one of 10 Out of School Time summer programs run by CSS throughout the city, ranged from elementary through middle and high school students. As Nancy Hecker, St. Martin de Porres OST program director, commented: “For many of these children, this is a unique opportunity to get out into a beautiful, green park environment to just have good summer fun. It feels good to see them just being kids running around outside and having a great time. They get a chance to meet new friends who attend other OST summer programs from various neighborhood communities that each program serves.” The children enjoyed sports games, face painting, swimming, water balloon toss, and a local DJ treated them to lively music, along with a delicious picnic lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs as well as healthy veggie snacks.
