Earlier this month, women drew strength from one another through the power of faith at the Fourth Annual “Women in Transition Retreat” held at the Malvern Retreat House. More than 100 women who are beneficiaries of Catholic Social Services’ housing and lunch programs attended this joy-filled event.

This year’s theme, “Women of Royalty,” sought to empower women through prayer, motivational speeches, and an Anointing Ceremony. During a mid-morning Mass, Reverend Anthony F. Orth, Pastor of Saint Gabriel Parish in Norwood (Delaware County) and Chaplain of CSS’ Chester City Family Service Center Coffee Club, said, “Jesus gives us the gift of peace so we can share it with one another.”

Those who attended the retreat participated in activities such as crafts, yoga, and a talent show. All programming was designed to help the women become stronger and more self-confident. In addition to the activities, time for silent contemplation and prayer was made available to assist women in strengthening their relationship with God.

For the third consecutive year, Jane from Saint Mary’s, attended this popular event. She was born and raised in Illinois, and moved to Philadelphia where she worked in the travel business for more than 20 years. She said, “I love coming to the retreat each year, it reminds me of home. I miss nature and love walking the grounds.” She went on to say, “I also truly like interacting with the other women. Each women I meet, teaches me something.”

This annual event is made possible by generous donations from the Malvern Retreat House under the direction of President Mark J. Poletunow. All overnight accommodations, meals, activities, and transportation are provided to the women at no cost.
