Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). This year’s theme was “Powered by Connection.” It recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on health and well-being. OAM explored the vital role that connectedness plays in supporting independence and aging in place by combatting isolation, loneliness, and other issues.
Catholic Housing and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CHCS) operates four senior community centers throughout Philadelphia.
Many seniors are drawn to the centers due to their vast spectrum of activities including art classes, trips, health education, nursing services, exercise programs, and wellness initiatives.
In honor of OAM, Saint Edmond Senior Community Center and Star Harbor Senior Community Center joined forces to present a “staycation” for their members.

“Many belong to both centers, so it was a great opportunity to join together so guests didn’t have to decide which center to visit that day,” said Janada Carter, Center Manager for Star Harbor. “The members of Star Harbor and Saint Edmond truly enjoy getting together for fellowship. They have a great time with one another.”
With Saint Edmond located in South Philadelphia and Star Harbor in Southwest Philadelphia, the sister centers collaborate on a series of events throughout the year and provide a broad range of activities for those aged 60 and older.
Kim Beatty, Center Manager for Saint Edmond, added, “Partnering with Star Harbor for this event was an enriching experience for both centers. It allowed us to bring our communities closer together and celebrate the spirit of Older Americans Month in a unique and memorable way.”
Hosted at Saint Edmond, the event included refreshments, games, raffles, and music as the members “set sail” to Mexico and Jamaica for the day. A volunteer was designated as the greeter and met everyone as they entered with a “welcome aboard.” Beatty, who donned a sailor’s cap for the day, served as captain of the ship. Members arrived dressed for a day on the water and made passports to be stamped at the different places they visited during the cruise.
“You couldn’t help but feel like you were cruising on the sea,” said Carter.
CHCS is recognized as a leading provider of senior living services throughout the Philadelphia region. The Star Harbor and Saint Edmond event is just one example of the centers providing socialization for older adults with a focus on overall health, wellness, and independence.
“The staycation event was a fantastic opportunity for our community members to enjoy a variety of activities and socialize in a safe and engaging environment,” said Beatty. “It was heartwarming to see so many smiles and hear stories of cherished moments.”
